At 1:35PM CST our US network encountered a network failure / outage. Our entire US based network was offline and all sites, servers, and systems were inaccessible. Within minutes we notified our network carrier about the issue, and within 25 minutes the cause was found to be a faulty router that feeds our network hardware. The issue was resolved and the router was replaced. The total outage time was 1 hour, 19 minutes and 3 seconds.

Level 3 issued a report to us stating that the power supply in the router had failed resulting in the router losing power and all traffic being dropped. Our deepest apologies that this has happened (especially in the middle of a US business day), while very rare, equipment does fail. The report indicated that the router was checked just 8 days before the failure and was found to be in good working order. Since this is the primary Level 3 router that feeds our network, the traffic was not able to be rerouted.

Since this failure we are now speaking with XO Communications about bringing in more hardware, and more bandwidth / connection options to eliminate this point of failure in the future.
