    Default VB.NET Auto Updater/Patcher

    Thanks to you guys I was able to get things working. Although I didn't use the exact code given from your developer. But here it is.

    RMX-OS AUL - VB.NET Edition
    Authors: crzyone9584
    Version: 0.3
    Type: Auto Updater/Patcher
    Key Term: VB.NET

    Introduction
    Downloads and installs updates like C# edition with a few tweaks.

    Features

    Downloads and install updates.
    Easy to use
    Error handling - Still working on a better system.
    Ability to install any where on users computer.

    Demo

    Download Here!
    Mirror 1

    Instructions

    With version 0.3 the instructions have changed. You will need to edit the xml file for the version of the program and or files.

    In this demo you have core files, sound files, and graphic files that are able to be updated.

    The layout of the xml file:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <Updater>
    <version>
    <corever>0.2</corever>
    <soundver>0.1</soundver>
    <gfxver>.0.1</gfxver>
    </version>
    </Updater>
    Upload the xml file to your server. With every update you push out just update what needs to be updated within the xml file.

    Zip files needed are core.zip, sounds.zip, gfx.zip.

    Change every instance of

    to what ever your domain is.

    Compatibility

    You will need the .NET framework 3.5
    Need to make sure that ICSharpCode.SharpZipLib.dll is with the program. Or it will not unzip your zip folder and give you errors.
    You will also need a file host that allows direct/hot linking to files.

    Author's Notes/Planned Updates
    I will not accept any PM's on this system/program. Updates will come when I have time. Do to limited time and me working 2 jobs, support will be low and most likely non existent. If you need help go to Crzy Productions and post in the thread there and I will get back to you shortly.

    Web Browser/News Page will be added.
    Better emailed, error handling.
    Program Not Responding will be fixed.
    Background image will be added.
    All urls and information will be stored in xml file.

    I'll have to update that post. Its now version 0.2 Downgraded the visual because of some issues and removed the IE web browser plugin. It just didn't work right. New updates will have everything automated. Just need to figure out how to use a xml file or ini file to store the web address and have it be able to check for something other than mygame.zip. But thats all in the future.

    First please read the entire thread. Next time I won't respond.

    Secondly if you just started VB.NET you shouldn't be trying this. You should start off with simple programs. I've been learning vb.net since 06 but only finally started to learn things like this. Also go to the site I told you to in the PM.

    Don't need to be so strict :), but I agree if you started learning VB.NET yesterday, this project would be hard.

    What type of program do you have that needs an updater?

    I know I don't have to be strict but if its in a post don't you think that its there you should obey and post in the thread instead of PMing someone who asked not to? But i did give him a great site to go get help on.

    So I want to let you know what the next update will include.

    Instead of an txt files we will be using either a ini or xml file that will allow you to break up your updates into main files, music folder, data folder, or how ever you want it to be. With that new file sytem you will be able to declare everything int he xml or ini file and not have to worry about touching the code it self. So stay tuned for Version 0.3 for it will be very good.

    Yup after my book report is finished I'll be reading up on xml and ini. Figure out how to compare information from the ini. I already have a layout for the ini but not the xml

    INI Layout

    [Game]
    Background = changeable backround image
    News= news will be displayed in rich text box
    GameData = version #
    Sounds = version #
    Battlers= version #
    Sprites = version #
    Extra = version #
    Gamedataurl = data folder url
    Soundsurl = sound/music folder url
    Imageurl = image url
    extraurl = actual game download
    I just need to figure out how to check whats in a ini compare it in another ini and then display the information on the form. Shouldn't be that hard!

    I might just use two ini one will be downloaded once then rename it to myversion after the comparison. What do you think?

    Wow, I'm really looking forward to see your project completed! It seems very promising. Hopefully it will be as easy to modify the code as the current version for beginners like me.

    Well thanks to a buddy of mine, I've been shown another way of doing this. So I will test out another way see if it possible to do what i want to do with it. If not I'll just go back to either an ini or xml.

    INI file will not be included in this update. Still reading up on how they work. What will be included in the next update is the following

    Different txt files for sound, gfx, and core files. Other than that no big change.

    Please vote on what type of file you would like me to use for info. Ini or xml.
